  Penguins of Chile

Human pressures have contributed to the global decline of biological diversity and integrity. A decline in penguin populations in the regions of the Falkland and South Georgia Islands has been documented for many years, with a rapid decrease of more than 50% in the number of Rockhopper Penguins in the last several decades. We are investigating the status and ecology of the Rockhopper and Macaroni Penguins along the coast of Chile, from Isla Terhalten to Isla Recalada. The goal is to assess the distribution, diet and demographic composition of these penguin colonies. Understanding the ecology and variances within these populations will provide data to quantify the affects of natural and human pressures, which will assist biologist and government agencies in determining their status and steps to protect the penguins and the island and surrounding areas that they need to survive.
