Scarlet Macaw Conservation in the Mayan
Biosphere Reserve

The Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS) is a Guatemalan, NGO established in 1989 that is dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitat. Its largest project is the ARCAS Wild Animal Rescue Center on the edge of the Mayan Biosphere Reserve in the northern Peten region of the county. It is one of the largest and most complex rescue centers in the world hanlding between 300 and 600 animals per year, the majority a product of animal trafficking seizures. One victim of this practice is the endangered scarlet macaw that lives in constant threat due to habitat loss and poaching for the pet trade. ARCAS rescues confiscated chicks and rears the young birds with the goal of reintroducing them into the wild as juveniles.
